... as a small group of believers meeting together each Sunday in St. Clements School in Nechells. This small body functioned as an arm of the Mount Peniel Apostolic Church Birmingham, pastored by Bishop JE Brooks.
In 1981, Minister Melvin Brooks was given the responsibility of leading the church. At the time, the membership consisted of fewer than ten adult members and twelve Sunday School students. He relocated the church to the old St. Clements Church on Stuart Street, Nechells.
By 2001, New J was officially born, following organisational and structural changes. During this period, the church continued to grow. New J was later inducted into Jabula New Life Ministries International (JNLMI) under the leadership of Bishop Tudor Bismark and Pastor Chi Chi Bismark. Joining JNLMI provided New J with vital oversight, structure, and accountability, ensuring our members had the security of knowing their spiritual growth and interests were being looked after.
In November 2006, a landmark ordination service saw Pastor Melvin Brooks elevated to the office of Bishop. He was also designated as Deputy Presiding Bishop of Jabula Rejoice New Life Ministries International, under Bishop Keith McLeod and Pastor Winnie McLeod. Bishop Brooks was later appointed Presiding Bishop of Jabula Europe and Asia. Other leaders ordained during this time included Elders, Ministers, Evangelists, Missionaries, and Deacons.
New J’s influence has expanded both regionally and internationally, leading Bishop Brooks and the evangelism team to visit countries such as Zimbabwe, South Africa, the USA, Poland, and India, where over 100 churches are connected to our ministry.
Since its inception, New J has been a beacon of faith and a significant voice for change and progress within the church community. We have hosted numerous leadership and church growth conferences and continue to support the aspirations of churches and ministries around the globe. Bishop Melvin Brooks remains dedicated to providing support, coaching, and mentoring to pastors and church leaders worldwide.
We are known as “the place where people grow” because our mission and ministries are focused on helping every member discover and develop their capacity for godly success. We believe that your past does not define your future, and where you start doesn’t determine where you will end up. At New J, you won’t be judged — instead, you’ll be supported and equipped to create a brighter future.
As a registered charity and company limited by guarantee, we are accountable for all our activities. Our trustee board oversees the church’s fiduciary responsibilities, holding annual meetings and producing regular accounts to ensure transparency and stewardship.
